First letter to my daughter, Bhumi!

Dear Bhumi,

Welcome to this amazing world!

Giving birth to a girl child is I guess the most special moment to experience. Today, September 02 2021, you came to us as a blessing.

Your mother and I have been waiting for this special moment for the past nine months and had many imaginations on how we would feel after taking you into our hands. Today after seeing you in front of us and taking into our hands, none of our previous imaginations was able to match our emotions.

Thank you for choosing us as your parents. You have already redefined the purpose of our lives. Your mother and I are committing ourselves to learn more about parenting and play an important role in your life.

On this special day, I want to write my first letter to you while you are still trying to learn breathing. I am sure, one day, you will read this letter and understand everything I am going to say. I want you to re-read this letter in different stages of your life and interpret it based on your mindset at that age.

I have just five things to say today. I will try to keep them simple. My intention is not to tell you how you need to behave. After reading, maybe, you should decide on your own if you want to follow these in your life or not.

Practice Empathy:

Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.

Empathy sits at the center of humanity. This is one single thing that can make us better at everything.

Ability to think from the other person’s point of view before we respond to the situation is very difficult but the most powerful strength one can have.

World is always a perfect place to practice empathy and when you choose to practice empathy, you will start treating people well and become a better person day by day.

Practice Gratitude:

Even when we are going through a hard phase of our life, there will always be something we can be thankful for. If we learn to be thankful for what we have, that satisfaction gives us energy and motivation to achieve many more things.

If I had to list all the best things happened to me in life, I may put “the struggles we had to go through while growing up” at the top. I think I am who I am because of those struggles and I am always thankful for that phase of my life.

Even if you talk to “Alexa”, start asking questions with “please” and say “Thank you” after you get an answer.

Understand what is “Enough”:

Understanding what is “Enough” is very important for your happiness in the long run. Especially in things like finances and relationships, it becomes much more critical to understand.

Our stomach is very good at reminding us what is enough when eating food, but most of the time, our mind can’t remind us unless we keep training it.

Practice Punctuality:

Try to stick to a schedule. Punctuality is the most powerful tool to achieve anything in life.

Even if others are late, we can be on time. Being on time gives us a sense of accomplishment. Being a few minutes late may not stop the world from moving, but being on time in everything we do makes the world a better place.

May be arguable, but I think punctuality is the first step in building trust.

Accept people as they are:

People respond to situations based on their generation, time, mindset, belief systems, thought processes, the environment they grew up in and many other things. People having different opinions about the same thing is absolutely normal and is ok.

Never expect and never ever be surprised if any person including your mother and I respond to a situation differently than how you would respond to it.

Beauty of life lies in understanding that people are different and yet accepting as they are.

I am sure there are many other things that make our lives better. As you try to explore them in your journey, hopefully you will come across these five as well and maybe you will choose to practice these.

I can’t tell you how excited your mother and I are to have you in our lives. I have 100% confidence, every simple yet deep question you are going to ask is going to make us think more and become better human beings.

Welcome again to this amazing world, Bhumi. I am sure you will make this a better place.

With Love,

A much concerned Bhumi's Father
